Over 7 million Americans suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, with a prevalence rate of 8-10% among primary care samples. PTSD has been associated with multiple physical symptoms, chronic medical conditions, and  excess healthcare utilization. Despite its prevalence, accurate recognition rates remain alarmingly low, and misdiagnoses are common. The associated deleterious impact on physical health status will undoubtedly challenge patient centered medical homes to develop primary care based approaches to identifying and treating trauma-related illnesses. This webinar will discuss: (1) the common physical manifestations of PTSD, particularly how PTSD might present for various demographic subgroups; (2) the prevailing neurobiological explanations of how trauma exposure leads to physical symptoms; and (3) evidence demonstrating how accurate identification of PTSD and trauma-informed care can lead to improved physical and psychological well-being. PTSD screening will be discussed and suggestions for providing trauma-sensitive care for both primary care and behavioral health clinicians will be presented. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.
