MUS Group Reserach Project

Posted By Neil Korsen, Sunday, November 13, 2011

One specific idea that came out of the discussions in Philly was the possibility of a small research project that would involve using a brief screening tool for common mental health problems and for current or past stress or trauma, and then administer this tool to patients with one or more common symptoms that are often medically unexplained.

Daniel Mullin is our contact with the Collaborative Care Research Network and will work with us if/when we decide to go forward with a research project like this.

Neil, Thanks for starting this conversation. I really like the idea of pulling together a project through CCRN. Regarding a screening tool that would pick-up medically unexplained symptoms, we used to administer the full Prime-MD (PHQ) at Marillac Clinic. It had a set of questions regarding vague physical symptoms that could be scored along with the depression repsonses to screen for somatoform disorder. A link is found here:

Was this ever tested or widely used?

BTW, Yesterday was the first meeting of the new CFHA research committee. Dan Mullin was on the call and it was led by Jennifer Hodgson. As they are just now pulling together plans for the research committee, now could be a good time to start the proposed project.
